Home to Seville City, the capital city of Andalucia, Sevilla province is awash with opportunities for the angler and tourist. The majestic Sierra Morena has some stunning scenery, with oak forests and wildlife. As with Cordoba, the Rio Guadalquivir dominates the angling scene, with a huge variety of species on offer.

Puenta del Verde o Lago Sur – Rio Guadalquivir
This stretch of the Rio Guadalquivir is located in Seville city centre. The fishing is free for carp, barbel, nase, eels, mullet and black bass. Depths average between 3 and 6 metres. The fishing is not on the main river, but on a separate channel called Canal de Alfonso XIII.
Species and methods
- Barbel. Target the barbel with ledgered pastes or meat over a bed of hemp. These fish, although small, fight very hard. Evening time is best.
- Carp. Carp are prolific here. Boilies fished on a stringer will catch the better fish at dusk. Float fished corn or beans will produce lots of small fish throughout the day.
- Bass. Float fished worm or maggot catches lots of bass on this stretch. Small spinners and spoons will catch you the bigger fish.
- Nase. Trotted maggot or pinkie on light float or pole tackle will catch you lots of fish. Very large bags can be taken in a short session. Feeder fished maggot or caster will also produce.
- Mullet. Float fished breadflake is the best method to catch these mullet. Use crumb or mashed bread as an attractor to keep them interested.

Paseo de la Barqueta – Rio Guadalquivir
This stretch of the Rio Guadalquivir is located in Seville city centre. There is fishing is free for a carp, barbel, bass, eels and mullet. The fishing is not on the main river, but on a separate channel called Canal de Alfonso XIII.
Species and methods
- Bass. Red spoons are the local favourite. Fish to moored boats or other features for best results.
- Carp. Fish to 3kg (6.6lb) can be had near the bridge. These are generally caught on simple float or ledger tactics. Worm is an
excellent bait. Feed with chopped worm and brown crumb for best results
- Barbel. There are loads of barbel in the 3 kilo (6.6lb) bracket here. Fish up to 10 kilos (22lb) are possible. Fish corn or worm over hemp. Try feeder fished maggot and caster for plenty of fish also.
- Eels. Try small dead fish in any snaggy looking swims for eels. These fish can go very large, so use a wire trace!
- Mullet. Bread flake is the way to go, although worm and maggots also work.
The section of the Rio Guadalquivir is situated in the north west of the city. Take the Avenue Torneo clockwise or the Avenue Concejal Alberto Jimenez Bescerril anti clockwise to Puente de la Barqueta. The section is alongside the Jardines del Guadalquivir. Darsena de Sevilla – Rio Guadalquivir
This stretch of the Rio Guadalquivir is located in Seville city centre. Depths range from 8 to 10 metres in the port, and 3 to 8 metres elsewhere. The fishing is free for a wide range of species including carp, barbel, tench, nase, bass, pumpkinseed, sea bass, eels and mullet. This is an excellent fishery and well worth a visit. The fishing is not on the main river, but on a separate channel called Canal de Alfonso XIII.
Species and methods
- Barbel. Fish the feeder using particles or maggots as bait for plenty of fish to 4 kilos (8.8lb). These fish gather is quite large shoals, so lots of sport is possible. Try brown crumb or a standard hemp based groundbait as the feed. Evening time is best.
- Carp. Fish for the carp with corn over a bed of maize. Fish the margins and slacks during the early morning or late evening for some cracking sport. Fish to 10 kilos (22lb) are possible.
- Nase. Trotted maggot and caster is the best method for these fish. Find a nice even flow of water.
- Tench. The tench tend to show themselves when fishing for carp. Feed with a sweet groundbait, or add some pilchard oil to brown crumb, to increase your chances.
- Pumpkinseed. Fish for these in the margins with float fished worm, maggot or pinkie. Fish light with small hooks.
- Mullet. Float fished breadflake, with mashed bread as an attractor, is the preferred method. Evenings are best.
- Black bass. Small artificials or worms will put you on the fish. Plastic worms, on medium to heavy jigs work well. Trip these along the bottom and around features for some action.
- Sea Bass. The sea bass here are targeted using large plugs such as a silver rapala. Fish in low light levels for the best results.

Embalse del Agrio
Embalse del Rio Agrio is a pretty water in magnificent surroundings. The fishing is free for carp, barbel and bass. The water is very clear, and this water keeps a constant level even in times of drought. Depths go to over 15 metres (49.2 feet).
Species and methods
- Barbel. Use trout pellet paste, pellets or spicy luncheon meat for these fish. Fish a simple running ledger, over a bed of similar bait. Autumn and Spring are the best times.
- Carp. Carp up to 5 and 6 kgs (11 and 13.22 lb) are quite common. These are generally caught on the bottom using corn or boilies. Try popups during the winter months. Fruit and vanilla flavours work well.
- Bass. Plenty of small fish are present, with the odd fish up to 1.5 kg (3.3lb). Surface fished poppers work very well on summer evenings. Otherwise, try small bright spoons.
Go west from Seville on the A49. Turn onto the A472 after a few kms drive from the city. Continue along this road through Villanueva del Ariscal and Sanlucar la Mayor. Just past Sanlucar drive on the A477 to Aznalcollar. The SE-538 hugs the western shore shore of the fishery to the west of Aznalcollar. It crosses the fishery and provides very good access. The SE-530 hugs the eastern shore, but the access is harder.

Embalse Jose Toran
Embalse Jose Toran is a very productive fishery. The fishing is free for carp, barbel, tench, nase, pumpkinseed, goldfish and bass. This is a very good pole water, with very large mixed bags possible.
Species and methods
- Barbel. While the barbel are generally taken on feeder fished corn or maggot, lots of fish are taken by fly fishing a montana nymph at dawn and dusk. If you do not have a fly rod, then simply use a bubble float with a long leader. These fish fight like bulls. Excellent sport.
- Carp. Maize is the best bait, although anything goes really. As with the barbel, dawn and dusk is best.
- Bass. Lots of fish can be had on spinnerbaits. Fish light for best results.
- Tench. The tench can be hard to locate amongst the carp and barbel. They are caught on the same baits and methods. Persevere and you might get lucky.
- Nase. Maggot fished on the drop is the best method. Feed lots of maggots at regular intervals to get the fish feeding. Other species will put in an appearance also.
- Pumpkinseed. Float fished worm or maggot near features will catch. This water is full of pumpkinseed. Easy!
- Goldfish. If targeting these, then try the same methods as for the pumpkinseed. Fish light, with small hooks.
Take the E5 east from Seville. At Carmona, turn left onto the A457 towards Lora del Rio. From here head north east on the SE-147 and then the SE-146. This road will take you to the waters edge. The road hugs the south of the embalse.

Embalse del Cala
Embalse del Cala is a nice water in very scenic surroundings offering free fishing for carp, barbel and bass. This is a very good waggler and pole water.
Be prepared to vary the length between float and hook in order to find the fish. If the fish are down deep, then switch to the feeder with a long tail.
Species and methods
- Carp. Drip feed pellets and mini trout pellets around a float at about 8 metres (26.24 feet) for some great sport. It may take awhile before the carp move in, but when they do, sport can be fast. Fish about 1.8 metres (6 feet) deep, using a slow drop.
- Barbel. The barbel respond will to feeder fished naturals such as worm, maggot or caster. You will pick up lots of carp using this method also. A sweet groundbait such as Expo works well.
- Bass. Try a small shallow diving plug near the dam or submerged trees for some nice fish. Green and yellow patterns work well.
Take the E803 north from Seville. At the town of Ronquillo, turn right onto the SE186. The water will be on your left. Take the turn off to Parlade for easy access to the fishery. |

Coto de Rivera del Hueznar
This day ticket fishery offers some excellent fishing for brown and rainbow trout.
Day tickets can be purchased from Agente de Medio Ambiente, Isla Margarita, (800 metres above the bridge over the C-432 on the Rivera del Hueznar)
Species and methods
- Trout. The season runs from the third Sunday of March until 31st August. Only artificials are allowed, with a 5 fish limit per day. There is a 22cm (8.6 inches) size limit for brown trout, and a 19 cm (7.48 inches) limit for rainbow trout. Mayfly nymphs work well here at all times.
Take the E5 east from Seville. At Carmona, turn left onto the A457 towards Lora del Rio. From here head north on the A455 to Constantina - approximately 23 kms. Pass through Constantina and continue north to San Nicolas del Puerto on the SE-163. The road crosses the river on the far side of town, and the SE-168 hugs the fishery going south west for quite awhile. |
