Murcia

Murcia is one the most historic areas of Spain, and has always been and continues to be an area dominated by commerce and agriculture. Its history stretches back to relations with the Phoenicians and Greeks. The beaches here are of fine sand, and the Mar Menor and La Manga offer great possibilities for water sports. The huge embalses in it’s interior offer some excellent opportunities for some serious specimen hunting!

Click on a fishery in the list to go straight to that fishery. Otherwise simply use the scroll bar to navigate throughout this page. In Spain, a day ticket fishery does not necessarily cost you money. Most simply require permission from the relevant authority.

Embalse Azud de Ojos

This shallow and easily accessible reservoir has free fishing for carp and barbel.

The deepest water, at about 3 metres (9.8 feet) deep, is at the dam wall. Fish here for best results, especially when a breeze blows onto the dam wall.

Species and Methods

  • Barbel. Feeder fished corn or pellet will bring lots of fish on this water. Fish about 4 rod lengths out. Also fish with a long tail (1 metre/3 feet). Use a simple crumb groundbait with crushed help to get the fish feeding. These fish can also be caught on spinning gear – try a small spoon, worked slowly, for some good fun.
  • Carp. Barbel dominate most catches, but carp will throw in an appearance. The fish are generally small, but a nice bag can be put together. Fish as for barbel, although the pole is an excellent alternative. Fish slow sinking pellets or maggots off the bottom once the fish are active in your swim. This will help to pick the carp out from the barbel underneath.

Embalse de Argos

Embalse de Argos is arguably the best carp fishery in Murcia. A large population of carp are present, along with barbel and crucian carp. The fishing is free. From Orihuela take the auto route A7 – E15 S.P. Murcia. Keep following the signs for the A7-E15 bear right at Junc 138 staying on the the A7-E15. At Junc 651B  bear right onto the C415 signposted Mula & Caravaca. Carry on the CV415 to Junc 57  Exit the motor way & follow C3314 signposted Calasparra . In about 11 kms you will pass the Argos Garage & Hotel on your left (this is an ideal place to refuel & have a coffee). Carry on on passed and in 500 metres turn right onto a narrow tarmac road at the end of the road turn left in 500 metres turn right signposted Embalse del Argos.

The barbel and carp will come in quite close at last light – so always worth while dropping a bait in the margins at this time.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. A good head of carp to 5 kilos (11lbs) are present. Fish the pole at six metres near the dam wall for lots of fish. Try corn as bait, loose feeding 5 or 6 grains every five minutes to keep the fish interested. Maggot over groundbait will also produce. Try fishmeal boilies on a stringer using the standard buzzer approach at distance for some better fish. Par boiled potato is another bait worth a try.
  • Crucian Carp. Very large bags of crucian carp can be had on bread, maggot or caster. Fish a light waggler or pole rig close in. Feed small balls of groundbait to hold the fish. Do not fish too light as both common carp and barbel will inevitably put in an appearance.
  • Barbel. Target the barbel as you would carp for some excellent sport. Try a half sausage or halibut on a bolt rig or method feeder pellet for the larger fish.

Embalse de Camarillas

Good fishing for barbel and carp. The fishing is free.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. Most fish are small, but provide excellent sport on light float tackle. Use sweetcorn, beans or maggots as bait. Winter and spring are the best times, although these carp respond well throughout the year. Pole fishing at seven metres using small hooks and floats will also produce lots of fish.
  • Barbel. Fish on the bottom using pellets over hemp and wheat for the barbel. Sausage or luncheon meat also produces.

Embalse de Cenajo

This is a really good fishery with free fishing for barbel, carp, pike, nase and black bass.

Species and Methods

  • Barbel. The barbel here respond well to paste baits – especially fish based pastes such as trout pellet. Fish this on a simple running ledger, over a big bed of pellets and particles.
  • Carp. A lot of small carp can be taken on float fished maize or corn. Fish a few rod lengths out and be prepared to ‘come up’ in the water, especially during the summer months. Large baits, such as boilies, fished hard on the bottom or as pop-ups will take the bigger fish late in the day.
  • Pike. Pike to 13 kilos (28.6 lbs) have been recorded from Embalse de Cenajo. Plenty of pike can be had to both artificals and deadbaits. Eel section, fished slowly along the current under a float is very effective.
  • Nase. Large bags are easily possible. Fish maggots or worms on the drop. Feed little and often, but be prepared to wait a little before the fish move over your free offerings.
  • Bass. Plenty of bass can be taken from the dam wall on artificals. Fish plastic lures or spinner baits bait caster style.

Embalse de la Cierva

This is an excellent day ticket fishery near the town of Mula. Fishing for carp, barbel, black bass and rainbow trout is available.

Tel: +34  968 36 26 28 or 968 28 39 18 and +34 968 22 89 13.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. The standard buzzer and boilies approach is king here. Bait with fishmeal or green lipped mussel flavoured baits. Fish a popup and PVA bag of broken boilies in the middle of your baited area. A fish of 23 kilos (50 lbs) was recorded here in 2001. This is a huge water, and fish location can be hard. The area at the end of the fishery near the dam wall is a good place to fish.
  • Barbel. Target the barbel on a method feeder with pellets. Use a fishmeal mix with crushed hemp for the method mix, with pellets and corn as bait. Maggots are a good alternative. Use a strong quiver tip rod to fish at distance – 60 metres or so.
  • Bass. These are few and far between, but can be taken on artificials or fly. Try small spoons with red or orange colours.
  • Rainbow Trout. There is a seven fish limit for rainbow trout, although you will do well to catch this many. Try various spinners and spoons for these. Float fished worm will also catch.
