Huesca

This region of Aragon offers a wide variety of sporting opportunities including horse riding, mountaineering, paragliding and mountain cycling. But, of course, fishing is the main attraction! The Guara mountain range is very scenic. Huesca also has excellent skiing at the right time of year. ‘green’ tourism and eco friendly holidays abound.

Click on a fishery in the list to go straight to that fishery. Otherwise simply use the scroll bar to navigate throughout this page. In Spain, a day ticket fishery does not necessarily cost you money. Most simply require permission from the relevant authority.

Pantano de Santa Rita

This water is a very good pike fishery, although bass, carp and bleak are also present. The fishing is free.

Species and Methods

  • Pike. Fish to 16 kilos (35.2 lbs) have been reported. Lots of fish in the 4 to 8 kilo bracket (8.8 to 17.6 lbs). Fish bleak deadbaits popped off the bottom, or small sea deadbaits. Artificials will also produce, with large spoons being most effective.
  • Carp. Plenty of small fish around 1 kilo (2.2 lbs). Float or feeder fished corn and maggot will bring lots of fish. Pole fishing is also very productive.
  • Bass.  Small rubber worms or American style spinner baits will bring fish. Use a wire trace due to the pike population.
  • Bleak. As with these fish everywhere, they can be caught in huge numbers very easily. Fish maggot, pinkie or pieces of worm under a light float rig or to a whip.

Barranco de la Canal Roya

Free fishing for trout is available along the full length of this river, from its source until it’s confluence with the Rio Aragon. This is a catch and release fishery.

Species and Methods

  • Trout. Mainly small fish present, although fish to 30 cms have been reported. Worm is the best bait. Free line these in likely looking lies, or pinch a small shot a few inches above the hook and ‘bump’ the bait downstream.

Tips: The river runs quite low during the summer months. Try to fish during the Spring.

Embalse de la Sotonera

Good free fishing for pike and zander. A good population of small carp, rudd and bleak are present, helping to sustain a healthy predator population.

Species and Methods

  • Zander. Lots of small fish can be taken from the tail of this water, but fish are present throughout. Fish small spoons or deadbaits. Small rudd and bleak work well. Fish during the evening, right up until sunset.
  • Pike. Not as abundant as a few years ago. However, fish can be taken where the river enters the fishery, and again at the tail. Large mepps style spinners, with double blades, work well.
  • Carp. This fishery is stuffed full with carp in the 500 gram (1.1 lb) bracket. Any method will work. Fish bread, maggot or corn on a shallow float rig for lots of fish.
  • Rudd/Bleak. Like the carp, large populations exist. Float fish maggot, pieces or work or bread.

Embalse de Yesa

This is a pretty place to fish. Free fishing is available for carp and bass.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. A good population of carp to 10 kilos (22 lbs) is present. Boilies and large pellets, fished with a PVA bag of pellets will work. So too does corn and meat.  The area near the dam wall can be very productive. Fly fishing is also popular for the carp on this fishery.
  • Bass. Lots of fish in the 500 gram (1.1 lb) bracket are present. They fight really well on light tackle. Try small Rapalas and spoons.

Embalse de Valdabra

This fishery has very easy access to free fishing for carp, crucians, bleak, gudgeon, madrilla and pike. The fishery is deep, with a sandy bottom.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. The fishing is seemingly not as good as a few years ago, but plenty of fish are still present. Fish worms, corn or potatoes for some good fish. Boilies and pellets also work.
  • Crucians. Hard to locate, and typically shy. Fish maggot, corn or paste near the margins for the odd fish.
  • Gudgeon. A surprisingly large head of gudgeon are present. Fish pieces of worm over chopped worm for plenty of fish.
  • Madrilla/Bleak. Fish maggot or pinkie to a light whip outfit for lots and lots of fish.
  • Pike. These are quite rare, but do sometimes turn up by mistake. Probably not worth specifically targeting them.

Embalse de las Navas

This water has free fishing for carp, pike, roach and bleak. This is a very good pole water.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. Plenty of fish to 5 kilos (11 lbs) are present. Most tactics will work. Strong pole tactics will bring lots of fish. Fish at 8 metres, with worm, maggot or corn.
  • Pike. Most locals simply use medium sized red or red/white spoons. Spin these slowly for best results.
  • Roach. Like the carp, fish the pole for best results. The fish will generally be caught up in the water. Fish maggots for best results. The waggler is a good alternative.

Embalse de Torrollon

Free fishing for zander, rudd, carp, bleak, pike and gudgeon.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. Lots of small fish to be caught to the waggler, up in the water. Corn or meat are the best baits.
  • Zander/Pike. The zander out number the pike on this fishery. Most fish are caught on small rudd or bleak deadbaits.. Wobbled baits work very well also.
  • Rudd. Some good fish to 500 grams (1.1 lbs) are present. Fish bread flake for the larger specimens. Light float fishing with maggot will catch plenty of smaller fish.
  • Bleak.  Catch this in their hundreds on maggot or pieces of worm. A light whip setup is all you need.
  • Gudgeon. Fish a very light ledger rig to a light quivertip. Use maggots as bait, over a brown crumb groundbait.

Embalse de Arascues

A really pretty water with free fishing for a number of species. The water is dep in places, and very clear. Access is very easy.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. Fish a short pole (4 to 5 metres) with corn, pellets or meat for fish to 2 kilos (4.4 lbs).
  • Tench. A good head of tench is present. Fish worm or corn over a sweet groundbait mix such as Expo. Float fishing, but on the bottom, is the best method.
  • Trout. Only a few fish are present. Some would say none at all! They have been reportedly caught on light spinning gear.
  • Barbel. Fish as you would for the tench. Not as widespread as the tench, but a few will turn up during a session.
  • Crucian Carp. Occasional fish taken on light float gear. Bread flake or single grain of corn is best.
  • Madrilla. Fish as you would for bleak in other waters. A good number of these are present. Always useful to pass the time if the other species are slow.

Species and Methods

This has some of the best and varied fishing in Spain. I will not list each species in detail with baits etc. Simply try it out. Carp, wels of all sizes, zander and bleak are the target species here. The area is spectacular, as is most of the Rio Ebro. There are also lots of very good guides available to put you on the fish. The key here is baiting well with lots of particles and boilies. If fishing for predators then lure fishing is very popular. As for the catfish, then……just enjoy!
