Huelva
Huelva is one of the least visited regions in Andalucía. However, being off the tourist trail has its own advantages for the angler seeking solitude. It is situated in the west of Andalucía, at the Portuguese border. It is home to the Parque Nacional de Donana, a wetland area of huge national and international importance. The wildlife is incredible here, and is home to the last remaining wild populations of Iberian lynx. A must for nature lovers and anglers alike.

Embalse de Chanza
This water offers good free fishing for carp, barbel and black bass. Although bank access can be difficult, for those who wish to persevere, bass up to 4 kilos (8.8lb) can be taken. If fishing for carp in winter, try to spot fish on the surface. The carp tend to shoal tightly at this time, so more fish will usually be in the area. Put some feed in and try your luck!
Species and methods
- Carp. Luncheon meat is quite a good bait to use for the carp. Most fish are small, so fishing relatively light on the waggler or the pole will bring some nice bags of fish. Bigger fish are also present and can be taken from the surface on crust or dog biscuit during summer evenings.
- Barbel. The barbel respond well to pellets or paste fished over a bed of hemp. Fish a bolt rig near features to prevent the fish getting snagged. Bites are usually very powerful!
- Bass. Leaded jigs work particularly well. Suface fished poppers also work during early morning or dusk. Fish as tight to snags as possible. If you can locate shoals of small bait fish, then the bass will not be far behind.

Embalse Jarrama
This is a nice water with free fishing for carp, barbel and black bass. It receives little pressure, so the fishing is very good. Well worth a visit. Fish heavy, due to the large amount of underwater snags.
Species and methods
- Carp. The carp go to 5 kilos (11lb), with lots of smaller fish present. Ledgered boilies or pellets work well, and tend to target the larger fish. Autumn is the best time to fish.
- Bass. Between 10 and twelve fish per day can be taken on lures and spoons. They average between 500grams and 1.5 kilos (1.1 and 3.3lb). There are lots of snags here to loose your gear on, so be careful. Surface poppers can help combat this problem, and they produce lots of fish.
- Barbel. Tagret these in the same way as the carp. They are not as abundant as the carp, but a few fish per session is easily possible.

Species and methods
- Barbel. Halibut pellets have proved quite successful for the barbel. Try fishing these on a hair, over a bed of smaller pellets for some good fun. These fish fight really hard, so make sure your tackle is up to the task.
- Allis Shad. Up to 50 fish averaging .3 kilos can be had in a short session on this fishery. Fish very light tackle for excellent fun. These fish can be taken on naturals such as worm, or on small mepps type spinners.

Embalse de San Bartolome de la Torre
This small fishery is set in a quiet wooded surrounding. The fishing is both free and very pleasant. Carp and barbel are the main quarry on this small but deep lake. As mentioned, the depth can be an issue for carp location. If the fish are not showing on top, try a pop up boilie, or corn with foam, close to the dam wall.
Species and methods
- Carp. Due to the depth, the carp are best targeted on the surface at dawn or dusk. Trickle a handful of free offerings into the water, and follow their progress until fish start to show. Try biscuits soaked in flavouring for some added attractiveness.
- Bass. The dam wall is quite good for lots of small bass. Unlike lots of bass waters, worms are probably more effective than artificals, although the later tend to produce the biggest fish.
Drive north from Huelva for 16kms on the N441, then north west onto the A495 for 14 kms in the direction of San Bartolome de la Torre. Embalse Silillos
Embalse Silillos is a shallow and pretty water. The fishing is free for barbel, carp and bass. There is little or no natural shade on this fishery, so avoid fishing during the middle of the day in summer unless you have adequate shelter.
Species and methods
- Carp. The carp go to 3 kilos (6.6lb) in this water. Simple waggler or pole fishing is quite productive. Fishmeal based groundbait will keep lots of fish in your swim. Try strawberry corn over the top – they love it!
- Bass. Try a roving approach, fishing to all likely looking features along the bank. Beware, sometimes the barbel will take a spinner, so be prepared! Old fashioned devon minnows, in gold or other bright colors, work quite well here. Also, if you have the gear with you, try flyfishing small flies and lures. Goldheads and fritz type patterns work well. Fish on an intermediate line.
- Barbel. Barbel respond well to maggot. Try float fishing as for the carp
The fishery is located to the east of Valverde del Camino. Drive east from Huelva on the A49, then north on the N435 for about 32 kms. When you arrive in town, drive eastwards in the direction of the cemetery. The lake is a little further to the east of here. |

Embalse Silillos II
This fishery is excellent for bass and some huge carp to 15 kilos. The fishing is free. Fishing is best in April/May and then again from June to September. Fishing is best from a boat, especially towards the bottom end of the water and near the island.
Species and methods
- Carp. Monster carp to 15 kilos (33lb) are possible. Large boilies will keep the smaller fish at bay while you target the big ones. Try to bait an area before fishing if possible. Fish near the dam in winter for some good fish.
- Bass. Lots of small bass can be taken on naturals or artificials. Some bigger fish to 1kg are possible. If using naturals, half lob worms tripping the bottom will tend to score best.
The fishery is located north west of Valverde del Camino. Drive east from Huelva on the A49, then north on the N435 for about 32 kms. After Valverde, head west, then north west on the A493 to Calanas. The water is to the north of town. |

Embalse de Zufre
Embalse de Zufre is a little fished free fishery, with average depths between 3 and 4 metres. The surrounding area is very pretty. Carp, barbel, nase, pumpkinseed and black bass are present. Most of this lake is surrounded by fencing, making access difficult. Try to travel light when exploring the water.
Species and methods
- Carp. The carp go to 5 kilos (11lb) here. Maize is the best bait. Bags of 20 to 30 carp can be taken in a day on the waggler or bolognese style.
- Bass. Fish up to 3 kilos can be taken on small artifical lures. Floatfished worm also accounts for some good fish. One good method is to tip a small spoon or spinner with a worm.
- Barbel. All normal barbel tactics will work here. One of the best baits is crayfish or crab flavoured boilies and pastes. This is probably due to the large population of crayfish on this water.
- Nase. Maggot, worm and pinkie will get you on the fish. Fish a light float outfit or the pole for some nice bags of fish.
- Pumpkinseed. These are generally caught on the same tactics as the nase. Scale things down a little for better sport. Worm is a really good bait. Try the margins or the dam wall for lots of small fish.
Drive north from Huelva on the A66, then east towards Aracena on the N433. After Valdeflores, turn right onto the A461. This road crosses the water after a short while. The dam wall can be reached by turning right just before Valdeflores on the N433. The dam is just past Na. Sa. Del Puerto. |

- Bass. Most bass are taken near the dam on spinner baits and plastic lures. Surface poppers also work very well at dawn and dusk.
- Barbel. Mini fishmeal boilies, fished two to a hair, work well. Fish these on a bolt rig, over a bed of fishmeal based groundbait
