Embalse del Negratin
Embalse del Negratin is a large and very popular water near the town of Zujar. Free fishing is available for barbel and carp. Only authorised baits are permitted on the water. They consist of artificials, maize, beans, potato, worms, maggots and paste. Some trout also exist here, however these must be returned to the water immediately. They cannot be targeted specifically. This water fishes best in winter and spring.
Species and methods
- Barbel. Barbel are the dominant depecies in Embalse del Negratin. Fish corn, pellets or paste on the bottom for these fish. The bottom is very snaggy, so pick a clean spot where possible. The southern shore is the best area.
- Carp. The small carp respond well to float fished corn or maggot, fished up in the water. Go deeper for the bigger fish. During the summer months, floating baits near any weed bed will produce. Look out for fish showing on top.
Drive east from Granada on the A92 for about 89kms. At Baza, turn north onto the A-315. Drive for about 11kms towards Zujar. The dam wall can be reached directly from the A-315 by driving for another 21kms past Zujar. You bypass the town when doing this route. Alternatively, you can drive into Zujar and continue through the town on the small access road that brings you to the southern shore of the fishery. This road hugs the southern shore before crossing the embalse and continuing onto the town of Cuevas del Campo. |

Embalse de los Bermejales
This is arguably the best fishery in Granada. There a lots of very big carp, along with barbel, nase and black bass to be had on this easily accessible free fishery. The surroundings are very scenic, making for an ideal day out. Only authorised baits are permitted on the water. They consist of artificials, maize, beans, potato, worms, maggot and paste.
Species and methods
- Carp. There is a large population of carp here, with some very big fish. This water is quite pressurized, and needs to be approached with some thought. The carp are very wise to baits and rigs, so quality rigs and presentation is a must. Top baits include boilies and pellets. Sweet flavours, such as plum or tutti frutti , have proven quite successful. If possible bait an area for a few days before fishing.
- Bass. Plenty of bass can be taken from the dam wall on artificals. Fish plastic lures or spinner baits. .
- Barbel. This water is stuffed full with barbel, and they are easily taken. Most methods and baits will succeed. These fish are particularly partial to beans. Fish two or three of these on a hair rig.
- Nase. Up to 30 fish per session is easily possible. Fish maggots or worms on the drop. Feed little and often, but be prepared to wait a little before the fish move over your free offerings.
Travel southwest from Granada towards Alhama de Granada on the A338. About half way between Ventas de Huelma and Alhama is the village of Bermejales. The dam is visible from here, with the rest of the water south of the village. |

Embalse de Beznar
A pretty day ticket water with fishing for black bass, carp and barbel near the town of Motril. Tickets can be purchased from Medio Ambiente, Maques de la Ensenada, 1, 18071 Granada, Tel: 958 53 76 00.
Species and methods
- Carp. Lots of fish in the 1.5kg to 3kg (3.3 to 6.6lb) bracket, with the odd larger fish. Fish with boilies, maize and paste over grounbait or particles. Huge bags can be taken when this water is on form. A simple waggler or pole approach is best.
- Bass. There is a 10 fish per day limit on bass in this water. The usual artifical approach will bring results.
- Barbel. Unfortuantely these are few and far between, but paste is a very good option over a bed of hemp. Normally these will be taken when targeting the carp. Spring is the best time to fish.
Go north on the A323 from the A340 between Mortil and Almunecar. The 323 will become the E902 after about 34 kms. Turn left at the Lanjaron and Orgiva turnoff (A348) after another 12kms. The water is visible from this junction, at the village of Restabal. Take the small road south of the village, which runs beside a lot of the water, including the dam wall. |

- Tench. Although hard to catch, up to twelve fish per day is possible. Fish corn or maggots over goundbait using a waggler or small swim feeder rig. The margins can be particularly productive early in the day.
- Barbel. The barbel have become very wary of anglers on this water. Boilies or paste fished on a standard running ledger will produce, but be prepared to work for your fish!
- Bass. Try small artificials along the shore line or near to snags for the black bass. Small spoons are particularly effective, especially those with red colourings.

Species and methods

- Pike. Not many fish in this water, but they are large. Fish to over 15kg (33lb) have been taken in the past. Try drifted dead baits near the dam wall for some fish. Otherwise, fish a wobbled deadbait along the shoreline for the odd fish.

- Bass. There is a 10 fish limit, although to be honest these fish can be hard to catch. Location is the key. Fish along the shoreline, searching out likely lies near snags with a small artificial.
