Cadiz
Unlike Almeria, Cadiz is the wettest place in Spain. It is home to some of Andalucia's most windswept beaches and prettiest white villages. It is equally famous for it’s sherry. The Cadiz coast is a destination for windsurfers, birdwatchers and anyone who prefers a wilder shoreline with relatively few tourists. And the fishing is excellent! Cadiz is the rearing ground for the famous fighting bulls - beware!

Embalse del Arcos
A very productive free fishery near Arcos. This clear, shallow water has a massive population of small carp, with bass, nase and barbel providing backup sport. This is an ideal fishery for the less experienced or young angler. The summer months can be extremely hot on this water so make sure to take plenty of protection.
Species and methods
- Carp. One hundred fish hauls are easily possible here. Most fish are small, but provide excellent sport on light float tackle. Use sweetcorn as bait. The area near the restaurant is best, with the dam wall providing some excellent backup sport. Use lots of groundbait to keep the fish interested.
- Bass. Plenty of fish can be taken from the dam on small artificals such as spinner baits and spoons. Fish light for best results.
- Nase. Although no where near as abundant as the carp, if you can locate a shoal of nase they you will have good sport using simple waggler or pole fished maggot. Try liquidised bread as ‘cloudbait’, along with loose fed maggots to keep the fish interested. The end of the lake furthest from the town is the best area to try.
- Barbel. Try for the barbel during the winter or spring using mussel, squid or crab flavoured paste and boilies. These fish fight very hard, so do not fish too light. Try a half or quarter pork sausage near the moored boats beside the restaurant for some good fish also.
Drive through Arcos and head along the A372 towards El Bosque. There is access along the dam wall, the road will pass over this. Easier access, and the most productive area, can be reached by turning left about 1km past the dam towards El Santiscal. There is ample parking beside the restaurant at the water side. Lots if purpose built pegs exist along this side of the embalse. The water shallows towards the end of the embalse. Some of the best swims are right at the restaurant itself. |

Embalse del Bornos
This is a very productive and pretty fishery on the shores of Bornos. The water is ideal for beginners, with large bags of carp easily caught. Some say this is probably the easiest fishing in all of Andalucia! Fishing is free. It is possible to circum navigate this water by car – but access is not easy. Lots of private roads and dirt tracks will bring you to the water, but the only real practical access is near the town of Bornos itself. Deep water can be found near the wharf, which is arguably the best area on the fishery. Deeper water also exists towards the opposite end from the wharf – well worth a try during the winter months
Species and methods
-
Carp. Very large hauls are easily possible here. Most fish are small, but provide excellent sport on light float tackle. Use sweetcorn or maggots as bait. Winter and spring are the best times, although these carp respond well throughout the year. Pole fishing at seven metres using small hooks and floats will also produce lots of fish all day. Loose feed little and often to keep the fish interested. Beans are a favourite of local anglers, and large bags can be taken on this bait.
- Bass. Plenty of fish can be taken from the dam on small artificals such as spinner baits and spoons. These fish are not as prolific any more, so location is key to success. Fish near underwater snags for best results. Flyfishing large lures or flashy streamer style flies can also be very productive.
- Barbel. Standard barbel tactics using luncheon meat over corn will produce barbel during the winter or spring. Lots of fish are also taken using fishmeal paste or boilie baits
Head northeast from Jerez on the N342. Pass through the town of Arcos, following the signs for Bornos on the A382. The town will be on your right. Head into town and drive to the lake at the south end of town. Alternatively, pass by Bornos on the A382, then shortly after crossing the north end of the embalse, turn right onto the A373 at Villamartin. This road will circle the lake back to Arcos. Try any of the tracks leading to the lake for likely swims, but make sure to keep away from any private roads. |

Embalse el Celemin
Unlike most waters in Andalucia, this embalse is a cloudy water. A recreational zone exists with tables for picnics, so not a bad spot for a day out. Fishing here is free. If targeting the bass and sport is slack, try bumping a small artificial such as a jig or plastic work slowly along the bottom for a bonus fish.
Species and methods
- Carp. Most fish are small, but provide excellent sport on light float tackle. Use sweetcorn as bait. Fish on the bottom with corn for the larger fish. The dam wall or the recreational area are the most productive areas. Another productive area is where the river enters the embalse.
- Bass. Plenty of fish can be taken from the dam on small artificals such as spinner baits and spoons. Fish light for best results.
- Barbel. Ledgering with boilies is probably the best method on this water. These can be fished over a bed of broken boilies, although a few boilies on a stinger is also very good. Autumn is the best time. Don’t ignore fly fishing if you have the gear. Standard minnow style lures, like the ‘muddler minnow’ can be very effective. Fish on a sinking line with a strong leader – about 1.8 kilo (4lb) minimum.
Drive south from Medina Sidonia on the A393. After about 10kms, turn left onto the A-5023 towards San Jose de Malcocinado and Benalup. The fishery is about 4km past the village, on the right hand side of the road. The recreational zone along the A-5023 is an excellent area, with easy access and lots of swims. Drive past this along the A-5023 until you reach a bridge on your right that crosses the river.. You can fish from this point on the river to the embalse. Further easy access is available on this side of the water. |

Rio Guadiario
This is a nice river offering free fishing in pleasant surroundings. The size of the barbel that are possible is quite surprising! If you fish the tidal areas of this water, then other estuarine fish such as bass will put in an appearance. Don’t ignore the eels is this area either – they can provide excellent sport on slow barbel days.
Species and methods

Embalse de los Hurones
Embalse de los Hurones is a very productive carp fishery with barbel making an appearance also. Fishing is free. This water is in one of the prettiest surroundings I have ever seen! The drive along the CA-503 road to the village of Charco de los Hurones is spectacular, as is the beautiful village itself. This is a must! If float fishing, do not go too light. Large carp are often taken in the manner, so do not fish lower than a 6lb main line.
Species and methods
- Barbel. Fish with luncheon meat, boilies or paste over a bed of particles, especially hemp and corn, for best results. A running ledger approach will put you on the fish. Winter and spring are the best times.
- Carp. Lots of carp can be taken either using the standard buzzer and boilie approach, or for better sport, on the pole. Use corn or small cubes of luncheon meat, loose feeding little and often, when fishing the pole. Fish are taken up in the water. Try corn or boilies over a bed of particles or groundbait when fishing on the bottom.
This water is situated in the Sierra de Aznar. Head along the A373/A375 from Ubrique, the A369/A375 from Ronda or the N381/N375 from Medina Sidonia. Head north on the CA503 from the A375. Follow the signs for Charco de los Hurones when you reach Cortijo de Ritijon. Park in the village after crossing the small stream. Sometimes you can drive directly to the dam wall. Otherwise you must walk from the barrier in the village (not easy if you have lots of gear!) Fish to the left of the dam wall. |

Embalse de Zahara de la Sierra
This scenic water is a deep water not far from the lovely town of Ronda, in Malaga. It’s location in the Grazalema mountain range, underneath the whilte village of Zahara, is truly beautiful. Free fishing is available for carp, nase, barbel and bass. During summer weekends, this water is very popular with families. Avoid these times if you prefer a quieter fishing environment.
Species and methods
- Barbel. The barbel in the water are certainly not easy, but well worth the effort. Most fish are taken in winter and spring. Fish large pellets over hemp or maize hard on the bottom for best results.
- Carp. Lots of carp can be taken on the waggler, or on the bottom using a standard buzzer and boilie approach. Try fishing pop-ups when fishing on the bottom. Use corn or maggots when fishing the waggler. These carp love groundbait also, with ‘the method’ proving quite successful.
- Black Bass. As with the carp, black bass are abundant in these waters. The dam wall area is probably the most productive, with fish responding to spinners, spoons and small plugs.
- Nase. While summer can be slow for nase, the rest of the year can be very productive. They are caught on the pole or waggler, with maggots as bait.
This embalse lies to the northwest of Ronda on the A376. Take the small road to Zahara from the A376 just to the south of the lake. This road circumnavigates the water. All areas are worth some exploration, but the official recreational and picnic areas are good enough! The dam wall is also very productive, especially for big carp and bass. |
