Badajoz

Badajoz is the largest province in Spain. The province is made up from low ranges of hills in places, but it is primarily a desolate and monotonous plain. The excellent Guadiana is the one main river , which traverses the north of the province from east to west, fed by many tributaries. This province is home to tench and comizo barbel!

Embalse de Orellana

Orellana is an excellent big carp water, with excellent backup sport for large bass and pike. Boats are also allowed between Cogolludo and the dam wall. A really exciting fishery! The fishing is free.

Species and Methods

  • Carp. Some people say this is the best big carp fishery in Spain, with others suggesting it could someday be the best in Europe! Big fish abound, with carp to 20 kilos reported. All modern tactics and baits will work.
  • Pike. Most people fish with artificals, with patterns resembling small pike quite successful. Fish in the 8 to 10 kilo bracket are common. A 23 kilo fish has been reported - who knows!? Expect up to 5 fish on a good day.
  • Bass. If possible try jigs from a boat. Otherwise small spoons or mepps style lures will work. Fly fishing with small minnow paterns also works well.

  • Pike. Spoons or tobys in stroing, vibrant colours work weel. Most fish average around 2 kilos, but the odd pike to 7 kilos are also present.
  • Bass. If possible try jigs from a boat. Otherwise small spoons or mepps style lures will work. Fly fishing with small minnow paterns also works well.
  • Barbel. Fishmeal pastes are excellent, as are small halibut pellets. Fish these on a feeder with a fishmeal based groundbait for lots of fish.
  • Pumpkinseed. Small pieces of worm on a whip or light waggler outfit will bring results.
