Almeria
Almeria lies in the far south eastern corner of Spain. The province enjoys the highest number of hours of sunshine in Europe – but also the lowest rainfall in Europe. The landscape is very arid and desert-like, but fishing opportunities still exist!
Click on a fishery in the list to go straight to that fishery. Otherwise simply use the scroll bar to navigate throughout this page. In Spain, a day ticket fishery does not necessarily cost you money. Most simply require permission from the relevant authority.

Embalse del Almanzora
Embalse del Almanzora lies near the town of Cuevas de Almanzora. It has free fishing for barbel and carp.
Species and methods
- Barbel. The barbel here respond well to paste baits – especially fish meal based pastes such as trout pellet. Fish this on a simple running ledger, over a big bed of pellets and particles.
- Carp. A lot of small carp can be taken on float fished maize or corn. Fish a few rod lengths out and be prepared to ‘come up’ in the water, especially during the summer months. Large baits, such as boilies, fished hard on the bottom or as pop-ups will take the bigger fish late in the day.
The water lies to the north of Almeria, near the town of Cuevas de Almanzora. Drive north on the E15. Turn off the motorway, heading east, onto the N332 to the town of Cuevas de Almanzora. The exit is approximately 16 km after the exit to Los Gallardos on the E15. The fishery is to the north of town. Follow the small road towards Alhanchete. The road will cross the dam wall. |

Rio Andarax
The Rio Andarax is a day ticket brown trout fishery. This mountain stream is a catch and release water. The stream is set amidst spectacular scenery high in the Andarax valley. Wildlife is abundant, with martins and wild goats to be seen. Access to this water is not easy, with lots of walking and climbing part of a day’s sport. Therefore aimed at the more agile of anglers! Don’t be put off by the physical aspect of the access, the fishing can be more than rewarding.
Tickets can be purchased from
- Medio Ambiente, Centro Residencial Oliveros, Bloque Singular, 2a pl., 04004 Almeria
- They can also be sourced via the internet at TeleLicencia.com
Species and methods
- Brown Trout. Fly and artifical baits only are allowed on this stream. Upstream nymphing can be very effective for the small but spirited brown trout. Barbless, single hooks only are permitted. The season runs from the second Sunday in March to the 30th September. The water is quite small, with low water levels during the summer months. The more experienced fly fisherman will succeed here, with catches of fifteen to twenty trout possible.
The area of Laujar de Andarax is the best base to fish this river. Head north from Almeria on the N340. Head west on the N348 shortly after Benahadux. Drive for approx 51km, then head north on minor road to the village of Fondon and then Laujar de Andarax. The river crosses the road in a number of places around Fondon. |
