Embalse de Crevillente
Situated just 3km from Crevillente, this small water has surprisingly good fishing for carp, barbel and black bass. The fishing is free. The water levels in this fishery can fluctuate considerably from year to year. This results is population levels of the fishing changing considerably. Check the embalse out before planning a visit or you might end up fishing a veritable dust bowl!
Species and Methods
- Carp.
Lots of small carp are present. They can be taken on most standard tactics, with maggots, worm, maize and paste scoring best. Floating bread crust is another good method when the fish are showing on top.
- Crucian Carp.
Scale down in the margins with maggot for crucian carp – but they are not easy to catch. Delicate presentation under a light float or pole rig is best. Feed lightly with pellets or liquidised bread to get the fish interested.
- Black Bass.
Not as widespread as they used to be on this fishery, but some nice fish can still be taken. Fish plastic worms near the dam wall for fish to 2 kilos (4.4lbs).
- Barbel.
Like the bass, barbel can be hard to locate. They tend to get caught by carp anglers fishing on the bottom. Try pellets on a method feeder.

Embalse de la Pedrera
This water has free fishing for carp, black bass and barbel. The occasional eel and zander are also caught – but rarely targeted - on this pretty water. This water has absolutely no shade or cover on the bank, so make sure to take an umbrella and plenty of sun block. The fishery fishes best in autumn, and the best areas are at the entrance and tail of the fishery.
Species and Methods
- Carp. Carp come readily to waggler fished corn, maggot or beans. Floating breadcrust also scores during summer evenings. Fish boilies on a bolt rig for some better fish. If fishing on the bottom try baiting the area with wheat or hemp.
- Black Bass.
Plenty of small fish present, and can be taken on work or artificial. Bump a small jig or plastic worm near underwater snags for best results. The best area for bass is probable at the tail of the fishery near the Torreagüera crossing.
- Barbel.
Small barbel respond well to pole fished meat or corn. Loose feed plenty of free offerings with groundbait. The larger fish invariably fall to carp anglers fishing boilies on the bottom.

Embalse del Amadorio
Embalse del Amandorio is a clean, day ticket fishery with low water levels. Small to mid sized carp are the target species. Fish often show on the surface, so floater fishing can be quite good. However these fish spook easily, due to the high bank and lack of bank side cover, so keep as low as possible. Sometimes better to drip feed some free offerings near to feeding fish and draw one or two fish away to avoid spooking the shoal.
Species and Methods
-
Carp. The carp go to 7 kilos (15.4 lbs) on this water, but the majority of fish a much smaller. Fish trout pellet paste over a bed of pellets for good results. Corn, maggot and beans are also worth trying. Popped-up vanilla flavoured boilies have proven successful for me in the past.

Embalse de Guadalest
This is a really beautiful fishery, with lots of and wildlife. The free fishing is excellent, although the access is a little difficult. Prepare for a long walk, so travel light. Take the time to explore the area. This landscape is really pretty, and a nice place to take the family.
Species and Methods
- Carp. The water is absolutely stuffed with small carp. They can be taken on any method – with waggler fished maggot being particularly effective. Loose feed maggots little and often to get the fish competing up in the water. Fly fishing is also very good – try a small nymph of Montana. To be honest, simply trail this behind a small bubble float using a standard rod and reel! Equally effective!
- Black Bass. Fish to 3 kilos (6.6 lbs) can be taken. The best area at the top of the fishery where the river enters the embalse. Artificials are best, particularly small spoons or plastic crabs.
- Rainbow Trout. Not present in numbers, but are generally taken by bass fishermen on artificials. Fly fishing will also produce. Try an intermediate line and a quick retrieve with any standard lure pattern.

Pantano de Beniarres
A nice carp fishery set in a pleasant mountain area. The fishing is free. The dam wall tends to produce the best eels. Mix a fish gut, pilchard oil and brown crumb groundbait to attract these fish. From the A7-15 exit at junction 70, keeping in the left hand slip lane, bear left at the roundabout under the motorway onto the A7-A77sign posted Alcoi/Alcoy (was A36), this joins the N340 about 7km before reaching Alcoy, stay on the N340 sign posted Valencia all the way through the town, (one way system). Carry on for about 14 km through Concentaina to Muro de Alcoy just past a CEPSA/ELF petrol station, bear right on the CV700 and carry straight on through the town staying on the main road, follow sign posts for Benimarfull then Planes (about 11 km from Muro). Just before you reach the outskirts of Planes you will see on your right hand side of the road a small religious monument. IMMEDIATELY before this on the other side of the road is a tarmac track running parallel in the opposite direction you have just come from, take a sharp U turn and carry on down this track, you will see an old stop sign on your left, 50 meters further on at a fork in the track bear right and take it nice and steady as there are a few pot holes, it starts to get steeper and rutted but it is passable with care, follow to the end and you will see the Embalse in front of you.
Species and Methods
- Carp.
Fish maize or cheese paste on the bottom over a bed of cooked wheat and maize. Fish to 5 kilos (11lbs) can be taken this way.
- Eel.
Lots of eels are present in this water, with fishery going up to 1 kilo (2.2lbs). Fish pieces of liver for good results. Worms, maggots and small dead fish will also score. Dawn and dusk are best.
